Men’s Golf Rounds Out Puerto Rico Classic in Sixth Place at 30-Under Overall

2/13/2024 | Men's Golf

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped its time at the Grand Reserve Golf Club with a final low round of 275 (-13) to give the team a 6th place finish at 834 (-30) overall.

The Rebels kept their momentum from the second round to tie for the second best round of the day out of the 15-team field. All six Rebels in competition managed an even or below par round during their final round. Overall, the 30-under-par score is the lowest versus-par finish Ole Miss has tallied this season.

"It was certainly another positive day for us," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We were close to having an incredible round but just got a little sloppy in the middle of our round which cost us. However, I was still impressed by the fight that we showed after a tough opening round. We need to get back home and really clean up our short game and be ready to go in a couple of weeks."

Michael La Sasso kept his pace all three rounds to secure a tied for 11th place finish at 205 (-11) overall. This marks the sophomore's fourth top-20 finish this season, sixth in his career, as he has never finished outside of the top-15 while wearing a Rebel uniform. La Sasso's final round of 69 (-3) also marked his eighth round in the 60s this season.

Patton Samuels held nothing back in his final round, becoming a big contributor to the Rebels' 6th place finish. The sophomore fired off a 65 (-7), launching him up 36 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 30th at 210 (-7) overall. His final round which included three consecutive birdies on his final three holes marks a new career-low round score for the Clarksville, Tennessee, native.

Tom Fischer shot a third round of 71 (-1) to give him an overall finish of 211 (-5) and tied for 37th. The sophomore had a solid performance in Puerto Rico as he counted all three of his rounds toward the team score and shot below-par for all three days of competition.

Tim Tillmanns and Cameron Tankersley rounded out scoring for the Rebels. Tankersley scored his best round of the tournament during the final day with a third round score of 70 (-2). Tillmanns shot even on the day to give him a 212 (-4) finish.

Competing individually, Collins Trolio rounded out his rookie debut with a 71 (-1) final round which included a bogey-free front nine. The freshman finished at 1-over overall.

Ole Miss will head back to Oxford to prepare to continue its spring slate at the Cabo Collegiate from March 3-5 in Cabo San Lucas where the Rebels will compete at the Twin Dolphin Club.
