Softball Wins Ninth Straight Game; 9-1 Record Marks Best Start in Program History
2/18/2024 | Softball
KENNESAW, Ga. – Clutch hitting in the sixth inning helped Ole Miss softball take down Pitt 2-1 in a pitchers' duel to win its ninth straight game and secure its best start through 10 games in program history on Sunday morning at Bailey Park.
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lexie Brady tripled home the tying run and scored the game-winner on a base hit from Aynslie Furbush.
Makenna Kliethermes was dealing in the circle for the Rebels (9-1, 0-0 SEC), tossing a complete game four-hit effort. She only surrendered one unearned run to the Panthers (5-4, 0-0 ACC) and struck out eight batters in 7.0 innings of work.
Pitt took advantage of a double and a Rebel error to take a 1-0 lead in the second and held it through five innings of play.
It wasn't until the sixth inning that Ole Miss rallied from behind, tallying three hits to take the lead. With one out, Paige Smith was hit by the 1-1 pitch to put the tying run aboard, and the Rebels turned to Taylor Malvin off the bench to put speed on the basepaths. Brady stepped to the plate and chopped a triple over the first baseman's head and down the line to even the score at 1-1. Pitt managed to get its second out of the inning, but not before Furbush singled through the right side to give Ole Miss the lead.
Kliethermes went back out for the top of the seventh and recorded the final three outs to help the Rebels win their ninth straight game.
Ole Miss looks to continue its best start to a season in program history next weekend at the Clemson Classic. The Rebels are set to take on UConn, Miami (OH) and Clemson February 23-25.
