Men’s Basketball Drops Game at Mississippi State, 83-71

STARKVILLE, Miss. – A halftime lead for the Ole Miss men's basketball team was erased, as Mississippi State earned 27 shots from the free throw line in the final 20 minutes of action to defeat the Rebels 83-71 on Wednesday night in Humphrey Coliseum.
 
Matthew Murrell led Ole Miss (19-7, 6-7 SEC) with 23 points, his 20th career game with 20 or more, sinking three or more from beyond the arc in the sixth consecutive game. His eight rebounds were second on the team and one off from his career best.
 
The home team went up by 10 early, 16-6 just under six minutes into the action, before an 8-0 run from the Rebels got them within one at 31-30. Jamarion Sharp collected an offensive rebound with four and a half minutes to go in the first period, one of his game-high 10, quickly laying it in to put Ole Miss up 34-33 and force a timeout by Mississippi State (18-8, 7-6 SEC).
 
Jaylen Murray capped of another quick run by the Rebels by sinking a three pointer to make it 37-33, before a pair of free throws from Murrell set the score at 44-40 at the midway break.
 
The two teams traded points to begin the second half, with four ties and eight lead changes transpiring in the first six and a half minutes. However, it was the home team that began to build a lead, earning 17 free throw attempts in the final 12:17 of action to score 43 second-half points.
 
With 23 points, Murrell moved up to 19th in program history in career points with 1,376, passing Tim Jumper. Next on the list at 18th is Jack Water, who scored 1,384 points during his career at Ole Miss from 1958 to 1961.
 
The senior guard also moved his career made three-pointers total to 206, one behind Breein Tyree who ranks 6th in Ole Miss history.
 
Sharp tied his season-high with 10 rebounds, a mark he also hit against Bryant and Detroit Mercy this year.
 
Allen Flanigan scored 12 points and added two steals on the defensive end, while Jaylen Murray added 12 as well and sunk a three-pointer for the 23rd game this season.
 
The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Tolu Smith with 24 points, who added a team-high six rebounds.
 
Ole Miss returns home for their next game, hosting No. 20 South Carolina for a big Saturday afternoon matchup in the SJB Pavilion at 2:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.
