Men’s Basketball Falls to No. 20 South Carolina, 72-59

2/24/2024 | Men's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. – Despite trailing at halftime, the Ole Miss men's basketball team fought back in the second period but would ultimately fall to No. 20 South Carolina 72-59 on Saturday in the SJB Pavilion.

Moussa Cisse helped Ole Miss (19-8, 6-8 SEC) jump out to an early lead, opening the game with an alley-oop from Jaylen Murray before following it up with a block on the defensive end and ensuing score. South Carolina (22-5, 10-4) would respond with a run to take a seven-point lead, up 13-6 with 12:50 left in the first period.

While the Rebels made it a two-point game moments later, the visitors extended their advantage to double digits in the final minutes before the half, leading 36-22 at the break.

The Gamecocks remained in front for the remainder of the game, shooting nearly 50 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes of action to counter the Ole Miss comeback attempt. Scoring 37 points in the second half, the Rebels would still come up short against a ranked South Carolina squad.

For the third game this year, Ole Miss registered double-digit blocks in a game with 11, led by Cisse's season-high five. Jaemyn Brakefield, Allen Flanigan, Brandon Murray, Jamarion Sharp, and TJ Caldwell each contributed with a blocked shot as well. Cisse is now nearing the 200-block mark for his career after today with 194.

Matthew Murrell moved into the No. 18 slot for most career points at Ole Miss now with 1,386, surpassing Jack Waters. Brakefield hit a career scoring milestone in the game as well with his first points of the game, leaping the 1,000-career point mark.

Cisse paired his season-high in blocked shots with a new best for the year in points, scoring 13 in just over 25 minute of action. The senior forward grabbed six rebounds on the day, four of which came on the offensive end. Cisse entered the game averaging 2.25 offensive boards per game this season, the 10th-best margin in the SEC.

B.J. Mack led South Carolina with 17 points, while Zachary Davis contributed 14 and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Up next for the Rebels is arguably their biggest home game of the season when they host No. 13 Alabama, who sits atop the SEC standings, on Wednesday, February 28 at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
