Men’s Tennis Secures Fifth Sweep of the Season
2/25/2024 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Ole Miss men's tennis team capped off its weekend in The Big Easy on the right note as the Rebels chalked up their fifth sweep of the season with a 7-0 victory over New Orleans.
The Rebels (5-4, 0-0 SEC) easily secured the doubles point to open the match against the Privateers (3-3, 0-0 Sun Belt), then immediately followed by dominating in singles play with straight set wins on all six courts.
Ole Miss set the tone early after Nikola Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt dominated in their doubles matchup, winning 6-0 on court one. The win not only marked the 17th win for the senior tandem this season, but also put the Rebels one win away from claiming the doubles point.
In his first match back after a few months of being out due to injury, Noah Schlagenhauf came out with a bang and secured the advantage for the Rebels in a 7-5 victory with partner Isac Stromberg.
Heading into singles action, the Rebels rode the momentum brought from doubles by taking all six singles courts in straight sets. John Hallquist Lithen would deal the first blow to the Privateers, winning No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2, to bolster the Rebel lead.
In a grueling match of his own, playing against one of his doubles foes from earlier, Carson Baker grinded out a huge 6-3, 6-1 win on court six, putting the Rebels just one point away from clinching the match. Stromberg continued his successful day after stringing together a 6-4, 6-0 victory on court three to taut the Rebel's fifth win and sweep of the season.
Although Ole Miss had won the match, the rest of the singles courts played out including Patoux who collected a 6-3, 6-4 win on court five. Slavic and Engelhardt were each put to the test on their respective courts as both battled to a 7-6 (2) first set win, but the duo was able to add icing to the cake after bringing in two more singles victories to cap off the 7-0 win.
