Softball Battles with No. 2 LSU; Falls 3-0 in Series Opener
3/16/2024 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. – Battling with the No. 2 team in the nation, LSU, Ole Miss softball dropped a close 3-0 game to the Tigers in the series opener Saturday afternoon at Tiger Park.
The Rebels (18-8, 1-3 SEC) hung with undefeated LSU (24-0, 4-0 SEC) for six innings, giving the Tigers a scare. Catelyn Riley got the start, her first in conference play this season, tossing 4.0 innings and only allowing one unearned run in the first inning. Offensively, Ole Miss only tallied two hits, one by Angelina DeLeon and another from Jamie Mackay, and stranded four runners on base.
LSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of a fielding error in the first inning. The Tigers threatened to score more, loading the bases, but a flyout got Riley and the Rebels out of the jam.
Ole Miss had a chance to respond in the second inning after Lexie Brady and Mackay drew walks. Delaney Rummell stepped to the plate and smacked a ball to the deepest part of the park. Unfortunately for the Rebels, the left fielder tracked the ball down on the run at the wall to save multiple runs and rob Rummell of extra bases.
Both pitchers settled in, working quick third and fourth innings. Still searching for the equalizer, DeLeon broke up the no-hitter in the fifth inning. She singled through the left side with one out, but the Tigers erased things with a double play.
Aynslie Furbush took over for Riley in the fifth after back-to-back singles from LSU to start the inning. The senior locked in and helped Ole Miss escape the threat and keep the Rebels within striking distance.
After Jalia Lassiter walked to start the sixth inning, LSU stranded the speedster in scoring position and went to work on offense. The Tigers rallied for two runs on two hits and a walk in the sixth, adding some insurance to their lead.
Down to its final three outs, Mackay singled, but another LSU double play ended the game.
The Rebels are back with a chance to even the series on Sunday, March 17. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
