Men’s Tennis Drops Hard Fought Matchup Against Vanderbilt

3/17/2024 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. – In the Ole Miss men's tennis team's second match of the weekend, the Rebels were not able to find the same success from two days before as they fell to No. 64 Vanderbilt, 4-3, at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center on Sunday.

Dropping the doubles match against the Commodores (10-7, 1-4 SEC), the Rebels (9-7, 2-3 SEC) were unable to string together four singles wins and complete the comeback.

Vanderbilt kicked off the match strong claiming court two, 6-2. No. 54 Nikola Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt forced a battle against their Commodore opponents on the primary court, but ultimately lost in a close match, 7-6 (7-3), as Vanderbilt secured the doubles point.

After claiming Friday's match point against the Razorbacks, Noah Schlagenhauf continued his momentum into today's singles play by defeating Vanderbilt's Michael Ross in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Shortly after, Slavic tallied his 3rd ranked win on the season after dropping No. 57 Danil Panarin in dominant fashion, 6-3, 6-0. The senior now holds a seven-match winning streak and remains undefeated in SEC matchups as the Rebels head into the latter half of conference play.

John Hallquist Lithen grabbed his second victory of the weekend after tacking on another point for Ole Miss, winning 6-4, 6-2 on court two. This marks the Gothenburg, Sweden, native's 67th career singles victory.

Although the Commodores trailed 3-1, they were able to regain the momentum as Hugo Coquelin defeated Brice Patoux, 6-4, 6-2. Engelhardt's singles match came down to the wire, but he ultimately fell, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Isac Stromberg matched up evenly to his opponent as he forced a third set after claiming a bagel in the second set. Stromberg and Vanderbilt's Joubert Klopper battled all the way to force a tiebreaker, but the Commodore reigned successful winning 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) and clinching the match.
