Softball Concludes Day Two of Ole Miss Classic

OXFORD, Miss. – Continuing play at the Ole Miss Classic, the Rebels went 1-1 on Saturday, splitting contests with Kent State and Southeastern Louisiana.
GAME ONE | Ole Miss 10, Kent State 0
Every Rebel in the starting lineup reached base as Ole Miss picked up a run-rule victory to start its day, topping Kent State 10-0. Makenna Kliethermes was sharp once again in the circle, notching her seventh win of the season.
Jalia Lassiter set the tone with a leadoff single and raced around the bases, stealing second and taking advantage of two wild pitches to score the game's first run. Jaden Pone followed with a walk and swiped a base before putting Ole Miss up 2-0 on a Lexie Brady RBI single.
The Rebels broke things open in the second inning, batting around the order and scoring eight runs, all with two outs. A Paige Smith double, Ryan Starr single, and Pone walk loaded the bases for Delaney Rummell, who ripped a two-run single through the right side. Following a walk to Brady, Jamie Mackay drove in a pair and singled to left to put Ole Miss up 6-0.
Aynslie Furbush continued the two-out rally, clearing the bases with a double in the gap and turning the lineup back over the Smith. The senior, who started the inning off, walked on four pitched and came in to score the very next batter as Angelina DeLeon doubled to left center to make it 10-0.
Kent State tallied back-to-back two-out singles in the third, but Kliethermes and the defense eliminated the threat. Brianna Lopez took over in the circle for the final two innings of play, stranding the bases loaded in the fourth and striking out the side to close out the victory.
GAME TWO | Ole Miss 4, Southeastern Louisiana 9
In the second game of the evening, Ole Miss was unable to fend off a late rally by Southeastern Louisiana, falling to the Lions 9-4 in eight innings.
The Rebels grabbed an early lead with Pone scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning, but SLU responded with runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 edge.
Looking to retake the lead in the fourth inning, Smith took matters into her own hands, hitting the team's first home run on the new field at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. With a runner on base, she smacked the first pitch she saw over the left-field fence to put the Rebels up 3-2.
Brady and the offense added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to two runs, but the Lions took advantage of an error to tie the game back up at four and force extras.
SLU rallied late, scoring five runs in the top half of the eighth inning to come away with the 9-4 win over Ole Miss.
The Rebels close out the Ole Miss Classic on Sunday, March 3, against UAB at 12:30 p.m. CT.
