4/12/2024 | Men's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team dropped their final regular season contest of the year on Friday, falling in a close matchup against No. 22 Alabama, 5-2.
The Rebels (10-14, 2-10 SEC) were able to string together some impressive singles wins late in the match, but ultimately were unable to take down the Crimson Tide (16-11, 5-6 SEC) at their home courts.
To open the match, the Crimson Tide would strike first behind a No. 3 doubles victory. Although John Hallquist Lithen and Carson Baker fought hard on court two against the 46th-ranked Alabama duo, they would eventually fall, 6-4, to give the Crimson Tide the doubles point.
Alabama kept their momentum going into singles by securing another point on court five. Isac Stromberg dropped his first set, 6-1, but didn't let this affect him. The sophomore fought all the way back to force a third set and win the matchup, 1-6, 6-0, 6-3, to make the overall score 2-1 in the Crimson Tide's favor.
Alabama would clinch the match after earning wins on courts one and four. The teams agreed to play out the remaining two singles matches on the day.
In his final regular season conference matchup as a Rebel, Lithen showed out securing his 16th win of the season in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, against No. 117 Andrii Zimnokh. Court six would ultimately go to the Crimson Tide in the final matchup of the night.
