Grove Bowl Games Generate Buzz for Ole Miss Football

4/16/2024 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss football team held a spring game unlike any other on Saturday—the Grove Bowl Games with not only football, but several other events, including a hot dog eating contest featuring the world record holder Joey Chestnut.

While the Rebels celebrated the end of their spring practices with 7-on-7 flag football, tug-o-war, a dunk contest and the world hot dog-eating champion, the college football world took notice.

Kiffin announced early in the week that Chestnut would host the hot dog eating contest. When Chestnut surprised everyone and joined the contest, devouring 20 hot dogs in just 90 seconds, nearly every national college football media outlet covered the event on social media and the web, generating an aggregate readership of 2.2 billion over the past week, and an ad equivalency of $4.2 million.

Kiffin came away pleased with the way the event unfolded, particularly since the Rebels closed the day injury-free.

"I thought it was neat to see guys compete, a lot of people doing different events. I hope our fans enjoyed it," Kiffin said. "I know our players did."
