Men’s Tennis Drops Contest Against Georgia
4/5/2024 | Men's Tennis
OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 59 Ole Miss men's tennis team was unable to find any momentum against the No. 38 Georgia Bulldogs on Friday, as the Rebels dropped the match 4-0 at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
The Rebels (9-12, 2-8 SEC) tried to outwork the tricky Bulldog team (12-11, 4-6 SEC) who had played a match earlier in the day, but Georgia was able to prevail and sweep the Rebels.
In doubles, the Bulldogs were able to take the early advantage starting with securing court three, 6-4. The 65th-ranked duo of Nikola Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt put up a valiant fight against the No. 36 Bulldog tandem of Freddy Blaydes and Niels Ratiu, but ultimately lost, 7-5.
Moving to singles action, Georgia started off hot with a quick win on court three, 6-2, 6-2. Engelhardt got the first set against his ranked opponent, but was not able to pull through, falling, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. One last win for the Bulldogs over Carson Baker in No. 6 singles was the match-clinching blow, as the Bulldogs capped off the victory, 4-0.
John Hallquist Lithen and Noah Schlagenhauf were on the verge of securing wins on their respective courts as each Rebel was one game away from the victory, but both matches were forced to go unfinished.
Up Next
The Rebels will now close out the team's home conference schedule with Senior Day on Sunday, April 7, at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, weather permitting, against No. 7 Tennessee (19-4, 8-1 SEC). The match against the Volunteers is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT, but may be adjusted.
