Men’s Golf Earns No. 2 Seed in Stanford Regional of NCAA Tournament

5/1/2024 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. – For the seventh consecutive season and 16th time in program history, the Ole Miss men's golf team found its way into the field of 81 teams announced during the 2024 NCAA Men's Selection Show after coming away with the No. 2 seed in the Stanford Regional.

The No. 2 seed marks the highest given to the Rebels in program history. The previous record was placed at No. 4 last season for the 2023 Norman Regional.

"I think it says a lot as far as how far we've come as a program," said head coach Chris Malloy regarding receiving the program-best seed. "When I took this job 10 years ago, we made a commitment to not take any shortcuts, to do it the right way, and to take our lumps for a little while. But, here we are. We're starting to really reap the benefits from that."

Ole Miss advances to an NCAA Regional berth for the eighth time in ten seasons under Malloy's guidance. Malloy has led his alma mater to national prominence with seven straight NCAA Regional appearances under his helm – the longest streak in program history.

After hearing their name called Wednesday afternoon during the Golf Channel's NCAA Selection Show, the Rebels are now set to head to Palo Alto, California for the tournament's regional round of play scheduled to take place May 13-15. The Stanford Regional hosted by Stanford, will be taking place at the Stanford Golf Course.

Ole Miss earned an at-large bid after having had one of the most successful seasons to date. During the 2023-24 slate, the Rebels have finished inside the top-5 in all but two tournaments, five of those tournaments with top-3 finishes. Ole Miss grabbed the tournament title at the Seminole Intercollegiate and has come in 2nd in four other tournaments. Overall, the Rebels are posting a 276.3 team average with an 91-25-1 record. Ole Miss has shot an impressive 103-under-par score for the entirety of the 2023-24 season and has held the inside the top-10 in national rankings for the past nine weeks.

The only other time the Rebel golfers have appeared in the Stanford Regional was in 2019 where the Rebels finished in sixth place after coming in as the No. 9 seed. Ole Miss shot an overall score of 843 (+3) and fell just one shot back of No. 14 LSU for fifth place.

Only the top five programs, as well as the top individual from non-advancing teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, May 24-29. The NCAA Championship will ultimately feature 30 teams and six individuals from non-qualifying teams.

"Holding up a championship," Malloy stated on what he's looking forward to most. "It's just the journey with these guys and learning. They've been open-minded, they've been very coachable, and they'll need to continue to be that way. Just watching them mature, and gain confidence as the year has gone along has been awesome. I think our journey is just beginning."
