Men’s Golfers La Sasso and Fischer Earn Conference Accolades
5/10/2024 | Men's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss men's golf saw two student-athletes come away with conference honors with Michael La Sasso on the First Team All-SEC Team and Tom Fischer on the SEC Community Service Team, the Southeastern Conference announced Wednesday.
Sophomore La Sasso became the 16th Rebel in program history to earn First Team All-SEC recognition, the first since Jackson Suber in 2022. Alongside La Sasso is sophomore Fischer with a place on the Community Service Team. This is the first SEC accolade in Fischer's career.
La Sasso, a transfer from NC State, is reaching the end of what has been a standout sophomore campaign in his first year in the Southeastern Conference. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native has led Ole Miss and currently ranks second in the SEC in stroke average through 26 rounds with a 69.35. He is on pace to break the program record for lowest stroke average in a season, surpassing Braden Thornberry. The sophomore has been Ole Miss' best individual in six consecutive tournaments this season and has finished inside the top 20 in all eight events this regular season, four of those being inside the top three.
During the 2023-24 season, La Sasso has shot 11 rounds in the 60s, 21 rounds even or below par, and 15 rounds below par. During his Rebel debut, he secured a career-low 54-hole score of 200 (-10) and career-low round of 63 at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate. At the Cabo Collegiate this spring, he earned runner-up inside a field that included 18 of the top 50 amateurs in the world.
La Sasso is not a stranger to being nationally recognized as he was named to this season's spring watch list for the Ben Hogan Award and the Fred Haskins Award. He was recently selected to compete in the 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup for Team USA. He currently ranks as the No. 5 golfer in the nation based on most recent Clippd Golf rankings.
Sophomore Fischer has played a major role in helping guide the Ole Miss men's golf team to get involved in the Oxford and Lafayette County communities.
Highlighting his community involvement, Fischer participated in Feed the Sip, which collected and donated over 7,000 non-perishable food items for Tunica and Quitman counties. Fischer, a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative, assisted alongside SAAC leadership team while packing donated items for distribution.
In the fall, Fischer assisted in Adopt A Basket, where the Ole Miss athletics department donated Thanksgiving baskets to families in need throughout the Lafayette-Oxford-University Community (LOU) ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Over 100 Thanksgiving baskets were donated during the Fall 2023 Collection.
On the course, Fischer has made the lineup for every event this season and holds a 71.56 stroke average. The sophomore has posted four top-20 finishes this season, including career-best marks at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate with a tie for 8th, his first top-10 finish of his career, a career-low round of 65 and a career-low 206 overall score.
