ESPN Picks Perkins as College Football’s No. 4 Breakout Player for 2024
6/3/2024 | Football
OXFORD, Miss. – Five-star prospect Suntarine Perkins showed flashes of what he could do for Lane Kiffin and Pete Golding as a true freshman in 2023, and experts think he could be poised for a monster campaign for the Ole Miss football team in 2024.
ESPN ranked its top 10 breakout players for the 2024 college football season, slotting the sophomore Rebel defensive end at No. 4 on the list.
"With Lane Kiffin at the helm, there is always plenty of buzz surrounding his team's offense, but Perkins is a talent on the defensive end ready for his close-up. In his freshman campaign, Perkins started only two games but finished with 38 total tackles (5.5 of those for loss) and 3.5 sacks. It was the ideal debut season for a player who will be crucial to the Rebels' defense this season," wrote ESPN's Paolo Uggetti.
Perkins wasted little time introducing himself as a freshman, tallying a career-high nine tackles with one sack in the season-opener against Mercer.
His breakout performance as a freshman came against none other than Alabama. The Raleigh, Mississippi, native tallied a career-high two sacks on a five-tackle day in his SEC debut against the Crimson Tide.
Perkins had a tackle in all but two games last season to earn SEC All-Freshman honors.
