What They’re Saying: McKenzie Long, Ole Miss Women’s Sprinters Turning Heads at NCAAs

6/7/2024 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. – The Ole Miss track and field women's sprinters haven't yet had the opportunity to earn a point in the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships, but even in the semifinals, McKenzie Long and Co. are already turning heads and breaking records.

On Thursday in Eugene, Long, Akilah Lewis, Gabrielle Mathews and Jahniya Bowers put down the fastest time in the nation this season in the 4x100-meter relay semifinal, a collegiate-leading 42.22. The group broke their own school record and rank fifth in collegiate history.

Long's day was far from done. About an hour later, she dominated her 100-meter semifinal heat with a wind-legal PR of 10.91 (+0.0) – putting her into a tie for sixth worldwide in 2024 as well as into a tie for No. 10 in the collegiate record books.

Less than an hour later, facing the end of a three-sprint gauntlet, Long threw down a gauntlet of her own in the 200-meter. She again outclassed her competition as she extended her world lead and broke the 22-second barrier for the first time in her career with a legal wind, crossing the line with ease at a mesmerizing 21.95 (+0.3).
