Tankersley Punches his Ticket to 2024 U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine

7/23/2024 | Men's Golf

CHASKA, Minn. – Ole Miss men's golf will have another representative at this years U.S. Amateur. Cameron Tankersley will tee it up alongside some of the best young talent in the game at Hazeltine National Golf Club (Aug. 12-18).

With Tankersley being the newest member to play in the prestigious event, 13 different Rebels have qualified for the U.S. Amateur over the past 13 years. Ole Miss has had a representative in the tournament every year dating back to 2012. Tankersley etches his name alongside Ole Miss greats such as Jackson Suber, Braden Thornberry, and Blake Morris.

FAST FACTS

The 124th edition of the event will be played at Hazeltine National Golf Club and Chaska (Minn.) Town Course. Opening in 1962, Hazeltine is set to play 7,599 yards/Par 72. Chaska Town Course opened in 1997 and will be the venue for the first two rounds of stroke-play. It will measure 6,804 yards/Par 70. Hazeltine has been the sight of eight major golf championships as well as the 1994 U.S. Mid-Amateur, and the 2016 Ryder Cup. Following the first two rounds of stroke play, the field of 312 will be cut down to 64, where match play will ensue.

HOW HE GOT HERE

Tankersley competed in a Monday qualifier on July 22, at Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas, Texas. Among the field of 73, only the top 16 scores were set to qualify for the amateur. Tankersley posted a (-2) 68 sitting T13 at the end of his round along with five other golfers.

"I hit it good yesterday but not many putts were falling. I knew if I kept on hitting it well, I was going to start making some putts. I knew I had to be around two or three under to be in contention."

Those five then proceeded into a playoff, battling it out for the final four qualifying spots.

"Coming down the stretch was interesting. I hit my tee shot right but stayed short of the bunker and hit my approach to about 40 feet. The guys I was playing alongside both made bogey and I was able to two-putt and advance!"

Tankersley will join teammates Kye Meeks, Michael La Sasso, and Tom Fischer who all automatically qualified for the event.
