7/26/2024 | Men's Tennis
INDIANAPOLIS – Ole Miss men's tennis' Nikola Slavic has been named a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
The one-time non-renewable scholarships of $10,000 are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring). Each sports season there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships available for women for use in an accredited graduate program.
All former student-athletes who earned an undergraduate degree from an NCAA member school are eligible to be nominated by that school for an NCAA graduate degree scholarship, regardless of when they received their undergraduate degree.
Slavic saw a multitude of success in his final year as a Rebel, leaving behind a legacy as one of the best in Ole Miss history and an impressive resume in order to receive the scholarship. The senior participated at the 2024 NCAA Individual Championships and was named to the All-SEC First Team which marks the fourth consecutive year he has been recognized in the postseason conference honors.
Slavic capped off the season by posting a 20-9 overall singles record including a 14-6 record in dual matches. The senior also tallied a 21-14 doubles record this year, playing only in the No. 1 spot for both singles and doubles. Additionally, the Stockholm, Sweden, native led the team in ranked singles wins (4) and ranked doubles wins (3) on the year.
In what was his fifth year with the Ole Miss tennis team, Slavic was a standout player and person for the Rebels. After graduating with a 3.89 GPA, earning a Bachelor's of Business Administration-Finance, the Stockholm, Sweden, native decided to return back to Oxford and receive his Master's in Business Administration.
Slavic has garnered countless academic honors from both the SEC, as well as the university in his time playing for the Rebels. These recognitions include being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in each of his previous four seasons along with being chosen as an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage graduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership are evaluated.
An equitable approach is employed in reviewing an applicant's nomination form to provide all student-athlete nominees an opportunity to receive the graduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through graduate study.
