Fischer Rallies from 2-down, Wins Round of 64 Match in Playoff at U.S. Amateur

CHASKA, Minn. – Tom Fischer survived and advanced in the 2024 U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine National after winning his round of 64 match 1-up in a playoff. Having to win his final two holes after falling 2-down, Fischer went birdie, par on 17 and 18 to force a playoff. He and fellow amateur Matthew Comegys of Texas Tech began their playoff on No.1 where Fischer secured the match advancing him to the round of 32 on Thursday.

It was a back-and-forth affair all day between Fischer and Comegys. The Red Raider grabbed the early 1-up lead on the first hole before Fischer made the match all square after two. Fischer took his first lead after a birdie on six and reclaimed it once again with a birdie on eight. Comegys then won the next two holes, taking a 1-up lead to the 11th tee.
Fischer made it all square on 13 but fell 2-down after 16. Needing his best down the stretch, Fischer grinded out his final two holes, winning both to force extra golf. He would go on to win the first playoff hole, cementing his spot in the round of 32.
Fischer will tee of his round of 32 match at 8:30 a.m. He is set to compete against Noah Kent from the University of Iowa.
