8/15/2024 | Men's Golf

CHASKA, Minn. – Tom Fischer’s resilient run at the U.S. Amateur came to an end Thursday at Hazeltine National Golf Club. The rising junior for Ole Miss men’s golf from Birmingham, Ala., fell 2&1 in the round of 32, match play to Noah Kent of Iowa.

It was another back-and-forth battle for Fischer on day two of match play. He took a 1-up lead on the second hole before Kent won two consecutive holes, going 1-up through six. Fischer rebounded with a birdie on seven, making things all square. Kent won the ninth hole to go 1-up as the two made the turn.

Fischer went on to win 11 and 12 but Kent responded on 13 making the match all square again. Down the stretch Kent went 2-up, winning both 15 and 16. Needing to win his final two holes to force a playoff, Fischer was only able to halve the 17th, falling 2&1 to Kent.

It was an incredible week for Fischer in his U.S. Amateur debut. He fired a bogey-free 64, in his opening round of stroke play to lead the field after day one. He finished tied for eighth in the stroke play portion posting five-under, securing a spot in the field of 64 for match play. He earned the No. 9 seed and orchestrated an incredible comeback victory in Wednesday’s match after falling 2-down with two to play. Fischer looks to build off his impressive summer with the 2024-25 season fast approaching for the Rebel golf program.
