Newcomers Granno and Nyquist Shine as Soccer Defeats Georgia State

8/22/2024 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. – Freshman Astrid Nyquist and sophomore transfer Sarah Granno provided two goals late as Ole Miss prevailed 2-0 Thursday night against Georgia State.

Nyquist, one of three Rebels to sign from outside the U.S. collected her first collegiate goal in the 68th minute. Neither side had been able to generate much on the offensive end before Evie Ewing sent a cross into the box. It was there that Kayla Keefer was able to make a touch and deliver the ball to Nyquist who found the back of the net. It was the first assist of the year for both Ewing and Keefer.

Ole Miss would capitalize again with Granno scoring her first goal as a Rebel in the 75th. Senior Aubrey Mister delivered a ball into the attacking zone that Granno was able to get a touch on and slip by the goalkeeper.

It was a defensive battle for much of the game with both back lines flexing their muscles. Ole Miss maintained the edge in shots (15-11) and shots on goal (7-0).

Head Coach Molly Rouse’s thoughts on the win:

“Georgia State is a really disciplined team and we knew that they had the capability to create problems in the attacking half. It took a lot of grinding away minute after minute, but we knew we could break through at any point which ended up happening. Really good opponent that challenged us in a lot of ways and we’ll learn a lot from the match.”

On being able maintain poise when adversity struck:

“I think the fact that we faced as many challenges as we did tonight, and we were able to overcome those, and problem solve those moments means that we’ll be better prepared for another opponent on Sunday. Certainly, there’s a lot to learn from, no game is ever perfect, but we’ll certainly hold onto the win tonight because it’s a good step in the right direction.”

The foursome of Katie Ramsden, Hattie Patterson, Tate Blincoe, and Riley Friesen kept the back line clean for the Rebels. They combined with keeper Taylor Prigge to force the team’s second straight shutout to start the season. Patterson was the lone Rebel to play the full 90 minutes.

Ole Miss remains home and welcomes No. 10 Memphis to Oxford Sunday. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. CT and can be streamed on SEC Network+.
