8/6/2024 | Football

DALLAS – Ole Miss football senior running back Ulysses Bentley IV has been named to the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list, as announced by the SMU Athletic Forum on Tuesday.

Bentley is one of 87 running backs nationally and one of 14 within the SEC selected to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top college running back. University athletic departments nominate candidates for the award and can continue to do so through October.

Bentley is in his third season as a Rebel and is coming off a full season of action after missing more than half of the 2022 campaign due to injury. Bentley ended 2023 with 540 yards rushing and four scores on 95 total carries, while also adding 87 yards and a touchdown through the air on 11 total receptions. Additionally, Bentley handled the majority of kickoffs for the Rebels last season, returning 14 kicks for 272 yards.

In his Ole Miss career, Bentley owns 976 all-purpose yards and nine total touchdowns, and combined with his time at SMU he enters 2024 with 2,172 total rushing yards, 23 rushing touchdowns, and 2,967 career all-purpose yards.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will also be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives. The recipient of the 2024 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 12.

The Doak Walker Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA includes college football's most prestigious awards and its 24 awards have honored more than 900 recipients dating back to 1935.

Sixteen NCFAA members are unveiling preseason watch lists over a two-week period as the association spearheads a coordinated effort to promote each award's preseason candidates. Following is the remaining 2024 preseason watch list calendar:
