Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep, Downs Little Rock

9/15/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss volleyball polished off a 3-0 weekend at the Ole Miss Invitational, downing Little Rock, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Center.

Shayla Meyer led all players with 15 kills on a .487 hitting percentage for the Rebels (7-2, 0-0 SEC), while Sommer Daniel added 40 assists. The Rebels held the Trojans (5-5, 0-0 OVC) to just .189 hitting as a team, while no Trojan went over eight kills.

The match opened with a dream start for the hosts, who burst out to an 8-0 lead behind a pair of aces and a kill for Meyer. The lead would continue to hold throughout the set, as the Rebels continued to pour on and built a lead of 19-8. While Little Rock mounted a run that brought them back to 24-20, the Rebels got another emphatic kill from Meyer to clinch the first set.

After another opening start of 5-1, the Rebels continued to maintain the advantage throughout the frame. Meyer delivered 10 kills in the second set alone, while Sasha Ratliff added three more kills. Little Rock was able to stay close and trailed 12-10, before the Rebels rebuilt the advantage with a 12-6 run and ultimately took the set, 25-19.

After a back-and-forth third set, the Trojans put some pressure on the hosts, building a 15-12 lead. However, a timeout by head coach Bre Henry settled down the Rebels, who rattled off six straight points to retake the lead and never relinquish it. Nia Washington helped put the match away, tallying one kill and three service aces to lead another 6-0 run and take a 24-17 advantage. Payton Brgoch would top off the spectacular afternoon with a match-clinching kill and delivered Ole Miss the win.

The Rebels head back out on the road for the non-conference finale, traveling west to Houston to face the Cougars as part of a three-match tournament that also features Tennessee State and Texas A&M Commerce. The Rebels will face Houston on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m., to open the event.
