No. 5 Football Dominates Georgia Southern, 52-13
9/21/2024 | Football
Ole Miss outgained Georgia Southern 607-194 on the night, holding the Eagles to just 37 yards rushing and 157 passing. The yellow flags were a thorn in Ole Miss' side for the second straight week as the Rebels overcame 11 penalties for 133 yards for a still-decisive victory.
Lane Kiffin's Rebels have outscored their opponents 220-22 through four games. The Ole Miss defense yielded its first touchdown of the 2024 campaign early in the second quarter. The Rebels went 195:47 of game time before allowing their first TD of the season, the program's most consecutive game time without allowing a touchdown since 1959.
Offensive Leaders
Jaxson Dart continued his Heisman Trophy-caliber pace, going 22-for-31 through the air for 382 yards and four touchdowns, adding 36 yards on the ground. Tre Harris was unstoppable as he finished 23 yards shy of the program's single-game receiving record, catching 11 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Henry Parrish Jr. once again led the ground game, tallying 89 yards and a score on 13 carries.
Defensive Leaders
Chris Paul Jr. paced the Rebel defense with 10 tackles, including two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Khari Coleman wasn't far behind with nine tackles and a forced fumble. Princely Umanmielen and Walter Nolen were disruptive as usual up front. Nolen totaled four tackles, including a shared sack, and added a QB hurry. Umanmielen had one sack and two tackles for loss. Brandon Turnage snatched his first interception in a Rebel uniform.
First Quarter
Ole Miss wasted no time getting rolling as Jaxson Dart hit Tre Harris on a 40-yard gain on the first play then found Wells on a 35-yard touchdown on the second to put six on the board just 31 seconds into the game.
The Rebel defense also went right to work when Dalen Cobb coughed up the football on a jet sweep attempt on Georgia Southern's first play, and JJ Pegues jumped on it for a quick turnover. The Eagle defense responded with a stop deep in its own territory, but Ole Miss capitalized with a 28-yard field goal by Caden Davis.
After a quick defensive stop, Ole Miss put together a more traditional scoring drive. The Rebels converted a 4th-and-1 by drawing the Eagles offsides, a 3rd-and-8 on a tough run by Matt Jones and a 3rd-and-1 on a Dart run before the Rebel QB threw a 23-yard touchdown strike to Jordan Watkins to make it 17-0. The 14-play, 80-yard drive took 6:07 in a stark contrast from the opening series.
Second Quarter
Georgia Southern was driving as the first quarter concluded, and the Eagles finished early in the second with a touchdown on a halfback pass from OJ Arnold to Derwin Burgess Jr., the first touchdown allowed all season by the Rebel defense, coming at the 14:12 mark.
The Eagles kept that momentum going with a surprise onside kick that, upon video review, went Georgia Southern's way. However, the Rebel defense came through when Walter Nolen and Chris Paul Jr. combined on a third-down sack to force a punt.
After the lone Rebel punt of the game, the Ole Miss pass rush came through again with Princely Umanmielen dropping JC French for a 10-yard loss this time. That set up a swift TD strike from the Rebel offense as Dart hit Harris on a 70-yard touchdown to stretch the lead back to 17, making it 24-7 at the break.
Georgia Southern netted zero rushing yards in the first half. Dart was 15-for-22 for 259 yards with three touchdowns through the air. Harris had already racked up 141 yards and a touchdown on six receptions.
Third Quarter
The Ole Miss defense came out of the locker room ready to go as heavy pressure from Umanmielen forced French to toss an interception to Brandon Turnage. It was a defensive player who finished off the ensuing drive as well. Henry Parrish Jr. had runs of 21 and 11 yards on the march, and Pegues finished it with an up-and-over diving 1-yard touchdown.
Umanmielen came through again on the next series, dropping French for a loss on a 3rd-and-short rush attempt for a three-and-out. The Dart-to-Harris connection churned out 39 yards on the ensuing drive, and Parrish finished it off with a 5-yard touchdown run to stretch the lead to 31.
A roughing the passer flag and a facemask flag against Ole Miss led to points for Georgia Southern on its next drive as Gavin Stewart connected on a 42-yard field goal to push the Eagles into double figures scoring.
Fourth Quarter
Dart hit Cayden Lee for a 31-yard gain on the final play of the third quarter, and just two plays into the final frame, the Rebel quarterback hit another big play through the air, connecting with his favorite target Harris from 36 yards out for the pair's second TD of the night. Harris finished tied for the fifth-most receiving yards in a single game in program history.
The Rebel defense sandwiched a pair of three-and-outs around a Dart interception, then the Ole Miss offense went to the ground game to put the game away. Dart ran once for 17 yards on the drive, and Domonique Thomas did the rest, carrying four times for 30 yards and a score to make it 52-10.
Georgia Southern drove into the Rebel red zone late but Chris Hardie and William Echoles came through with key tackles for loss, forcing the Eagles to settle for a 33-yard Stewart field goal.
