Soccer Downed By Blazers In Birmingham
9/5/2024 | Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss dropped its Thursday night game at UAB by a score of 0-1. A penalty kick scored by UAB's Abbey Burns in the 58th minute would end up being the deciding goal in the match.
It was a defensive battle in the first half with both sides generating just four shots combined. The Rebels held the advantage in corners but were unable to break into the scoring column in the first 45 minutes of action. UAB created two opportunities late in the half but were denied after stout play from the Ole Miss back line. Riley Friesen made a nice play on the ball clearing away a corner opportunity as the half winded down.
The offensive intensity picked up on both sides as the second half began. The Blazers generated several offensive chances inside the attacking zone early, ultimately leading to the penalty. A hard tackle from Tate Blincoe inside the box resulted in the PK award. Burns was able to capitalize, sending the ball past Shu Ohba, putting the Blazers up one.
Ole Miss maintained composure after surrendering the lead and continued to apply pressure on the offensive side of the ball. The Rebels held the edge in shots (7-4) and corners (5-2) but were unable to find the tying goal.
Ole Miss (3-3-0) returns to Birmingham this Sunday for a match at Samford. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT and can be streamed on ESPN+.
