Volleyball Rallies for Reverse Sweep of Alabama
10/31/2025 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. – A career-high in kills from Gabi Placide helped lead the Ole Miss volleyball program to a reverse sweep of Alabama, 3-2, on Friday night at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
Placide tallied 28 kills to pace the Rebels (11-11, 3-8 SEC), while adding nine digs and six blocks. Shayla Meyer added 17 kills and 10 digs, while Mokihana Tufono shined on senior night with 46 assists and 20 digs. Cammy Niesen added 17 digs and five assists. Kaleigh Palmer led the Crimson Tide (10-11, 2-9 SEC) with 15 kills.
The Rebels picked up the program's first reverse sweep victory since a win against Northwestern on Sept. 10, 2016.
The day started with promise for the hosts, as the Rebels built an 11-7 lead behind five quick kills from Placide. The lead expanded further, ballooning to 18-13, but the Crimson Tide pushed back into the set. The Crimson Tide went on a 7-2 run, tying the match at 20-20. Two kills from Meyer helped keep the match even at 23-23, but the visitors completed the comeback by taking the last two points and winning the set 25-23.
Much like the first set, the Rebels surged ahead to a 7-3 lead but had to try and fend off the Crimson Tide a second time. Meyer and Placide continued to stack up kills, alongside some key swings from Melia Johnson. However, a 7-0 run by the Crimson Tide flipped the set on its head from 14-10, to 17-14. However, strong serving from Meyer helped the Rebels fight back into the set and take a 23-22 lead. Alabama tallied two quick points to force a set point, but Placide saved it with an emphatic kill. An ace by Bella Bonanno gave Ole Miss a set point at 25-24, but Alabama responded with its own save. Alabama promptly saved another set point at 26-25 and ultimately rallied to take the set, 28-26.
With their backs against the wall, the Rebels did not back down. Once again, the Rebels built a quick 11-7 lead, but did not let the Crimson Tide push back. Keirstyn Carlton started to get hot, tallying a kill and two blocks to increase the lead up to 18-10. Placide and Meyer would keep the Crimson Tide at arm's length from there, trading key swings as the Rebels secured the opening set 25-17.
Alabama opened the fourth set with energy, building a 4-1 lead and forcing an early timeout by head coach Bre Henry. The timeout would pay immediate dividends, as Ole Miss surged to an 8-2 run out of the break, behind strong serving from Tufono. The Crimson Tide could not hold off the surging Placide, who tallied seven kills in the set alone and helped balloon the lead to 22-15. Carly Paugh's energy off the bench carried the Rebels from there, as Paugh tallied a block and a kill and the Rebels would force a fifth set with 25-19 win.
With the Gillom Center buzzing, the Rebels rode the wave of emotion to an emphatic start. Two more kills from Placide and a key block built a 5-0 lead. The lead grew to 8-2, but the Crimson Tide answered to cut the lead to 11-10. Needing to close out the match and hold off the visitors, Placide did what she does best, making no mistake on a pair of kills, before Carlton sealed it by pouncing on a free ball over the net to clinch a 15-10 win.
The Rebels return to action on Sunday, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
