Iwuala, McMahon Record Double-Doubles as Women’s Basketball Routs Southern

OXFORD, Miss. – An overwhelming effort on both ends of the court led to No. 13/16 Ole Miss’ most dominant effort of the season, as it routed Southern 94-44 on Wednesday evening at the SJB Pavilion.
The Rebels (3-0, 0-0 SEC) are off to one of the hottest offensive starts in program history, certainly during head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s tenure in Oxford. For only the 10th time in program history, and most recently since the 2014-15 season, Ole Miss has opened a season with three consecutive games of at least 80 points.
The offensive success has translated defensively, as well. Ole Miss’ 50-point win over Southern (0-3, 0-0 SWAC) is the biggest gap this season, and extends the Rebels’ already record-setting win margin. This is the first time in Ole Miss women’s basketball history that the Rebels have averaged at least a 40-point margin through the first three games of the season.
Additionally, 44 points allowed is the fewest by the Rebels this season, who have yet to allow a team to score more than 50 points thus far in the young season. It’s the first time a Rebel team has allowed fewer than 50 points in each of the first three games of the season.
Iwuala and McMahon stole the show for Ole Miss, but all 12 Rebels got an opportunity to compete. Iwuala paced the field with career high marks in points with 22 and rebounds with 11. Her frontcourt partner, McMahon, recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds, marking it her 11th of her overall career. This is the second time in two seasons that two Rebels recorded a double-double in the same game, with Kennedy Todd-Williams and Starr Jacobs doing so last season against Ball State.
Iwuala and McMahon led the most efficient scoring output from the Rebels all season, going 53.2 percent from the field. Most of that success came from close range, as the Rebels scored 50 points in paint alone.

Ole Miss forced Southern to struggle offensively early on, as the Jaguars had three travels in the first five minutes of the game. Iwuala took advantage of Southern’s sloppy offensive by dominating in the paint, putting up six points before the first media timeout. The remainder of the period went smoothly for the Rebels, who put up 20 points against the Jaguars through one. A last second three by the Jaguars would give Ole Miss just a nine-point lead entering the second.
The second period maintained the same energy as the first, with Debreasha Powe knocking down her first three of the evening. Southern made a mid-range jump shot, to which Sira Thienou answered with a layup. Latasha Lattimore electrified the crowd by converting a layup while getting fouled after a three from Southern. Iwuala reached double figures with a pair of back-to-back layups and Powe drained another three after the media timeout. The Rebels closed the first half with a 6-0 scoring run to cap the half with a 43-20 lead.

Iwuala and the Rebels stayed dominant in the second half, extending their unanswered point streak to 14. Iwuala scored her career-high 16th point in the first two minutes of the period and would then answer four Southern points with two more layups of her own, putting her at 20 points for the first time in her career. Her and McMahon continued to tack on the points as the Rebels outscored the Jaguars, 30-10, in the third to have a 73-30 lead entering the fourth quarter.
With the game locked, many of the reserves entered the game after Iwuala and McMahon had secured their double-doubles. Freshman Lauren Jacobs had the strongest quarter among all Rebels this season, scoring nine points in only six minutes on the court in the fourth. Nine points is the most by any Rebel in a single quarter this season. Jacobs scored her second 3-pointer of the evening for Ole Miss’ last points, before Southern knocked down a couple free throws and locked in the final score of the day, 94-44.
