Men’s Cross Country Finishes 22nd at NCAA Championships

11/22/2025 | Cross Country

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Ole Miss men's cross country finished the season strong, taking 22nd place at the 2025 NCAA Championships at Missouri's Gans Creek Cross Country Course on Saturday morning.

The No. 25 Rebel men continued to show resilience, bouncing back from a tough conference meet to nab their ninth consecutive top-25 national finish in as many attempts as a team qualifier since 2016. Ole Miss ended up with 538 points and eight ranked wins on the day in the championship 10K race, including wins over higher ranked No. 17 Michigan State (23rd, 547), No. 21 Georgia (24th, 562), No. 15 Cal Baptist (25th, 577) and No. 18 Princeton (27th, 598). No. 1 Oklahoma State took the team title, beating out No. 3 New Mexico, 57-82.

Redshirt junior and SEC Newcomer of the Year Kidus Misgina wrapped his first cross country season with the Rebels as he has all season long as Ole Miss' low-stick, leading the pack in 46th place at a nine-second 10K best of 29:11.4. Misgina, who shattered the Ole Miss 10K record outdoors last spring, finished 2025 with an average cross country finish of 14.4.

Senior Toby Gillen wrapped his superb Ole Miss career on Saturday as the second Rebel across the line, finishing 96th in 29:34.0. All told, Gillen leaves Ole Miss as a three-time All-Region and two-time All-SEC runner in cross country, and on the track he was a three-time SEC scorer with 32 career points and three medals – including an SEC title outdoors in the 10K last spring – as well as a first-team All-America nod outdoors in the 5K in 2024.

Senior Evan Thornton-Sherman ran a 10K PR in his final cross country race as a Rebel in 137th place at 29:51.6, with fellow senior Marco Perez crossing in 181st place at 30:19.3. Freshman Owen Kelley dropped an impressive 31 seconds off his 10K best set last week, finishing 200th at 30:28.1. Rounding out the Rebel lineup on Saturday were freshman John Shoemaker in 242nd (31:36.0) and redshirt sophomore Zack Gilbertson in 249th at 31:54.1.

With cross country now in the rearview, Ole Miss will turn the page to the indoor track season, which starts in two weeks at Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Dec. 6 and resumes one month later at Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial on Jan. 9-10.
