Volleyball Exits the SEC Tournament, Falls to No. 3 Texas

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Ole Miss volleyball program fell in the Allstate SEC Volleyball Tournament quarterfinals, 3-0, to No. 3 Texas on Sunday night at Enmarket Arena.
Melia Johnson led the Rebels (14-15, 4-11 SEC) with nine kills on .350 hitting and added two digs. Torrey Stafford led the Longhorns (22-2, 13-2 SEC) with 16 kills.
The Longhorns would come out of the gate with strong hitting and built an early advantage. Gabi Placide found some early rhythm with a pair of kills, but the Longhorns quickly surged to an 8-0 run to take a lead as large as 21-7. The Rebels strung together a 4-1 run to chip away, as Johnson delivered a pair of nice swings, but Texas took the opening set, 25-11.
The Rebels converted on the first three swings of the second set, but Texas managed to jump out in front from there. Another big run by the Longhorns, this time by a 7-1 fashion, helped them surge in front to a 16-7 lead. The Rebels were able to get momentum back, as Mokihana Tufono set up Johnson for a kill and contributed on a block to start a 3-0 run. The Rebels put more pressure on the Longhorns from there, as Aniya Lewis delivered a spark off the bench with a kill and Shayla Meyer tallied back-to-back kills to force Texas into a timeout at 23-17. However, the Longhorns would prevail to take the set 25-17.
The Longhorns would begin to pull away from there, surging to a large advantage in the third set. Johnson would add four more kills in the third set, but the Longhorns closed out a 25-8 victory.
