No. 19 Men’s Basketball Earns Road Win at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 19 Ole Miss men’s basketball team (19-6, 8-4 SEC) came away with a 72-68 road victory Wednesday night against South Carolina at Colonial Life Arena. The Rebels forced the Gamecocks (10-14, 0-11 SEC) into a pair of turnovers inside the final 50 seconds and were led by Malik Dia with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

Ole Miss started the game 5-of-5 from the floor, taking a 12-6 lead into the under 16 media timeout. The Rebels attacked the paint early and often offensively between the trio of Jaemyn Brakefield, Dre Davis and Malik Dia, while the Rebel defense was active early, forcing Carolina into late shot clock attempts and contested looks.
The Gamecocks would battle back, outscoring Ole Miss 9-4 over the next five minutes, cutting the lead to 16-13 with 11:54 remaining. However, Ole Miss would stretch the lead back to nine at the under-eight media, taking a 32-23 lead. The Rebels had the long ball working, connecting on five of their first six triples.
The Rebels turned in their best first half shooting from both the field and from long distance this season. Ole Miss shot 15-of-23 from the floor over the first 20 minutes, good for 65.2 percent. The Rebels also converted 6-of-9 from three-point land, good for 66.7 percent.
Ole Miss would lead by as many as 13 in the first half but took a 42-32 lead into the break.
South Carolina would fight back taking a 58-57 lead with 6:45 remaining in the second half.
Ole Miss remained composed, coming out of a timeout to convert a huge bucket plus the foul from Malik Dia off a Jaemyn Brakefield assist. The Rebels would get a stop on the defensive end and find Dia a second time off a duck in pass for another lay in.
South Carolina would regain the lead at 64-62 with 3:59 to play off a Jacobi Wright jumper. The two sides would exchange baskets before a Dia triple from the top of the key made it 69-66, Rebels. South Carolina would respond with a bucket cutting the Ole Miss lead to one with 1:36 to play.
Dre Davis had the biggest play of the night for Ole Miss, generating a steal with 50 seconds left. Davis would convert a huge layup with 22.4 left making it 71-68 Ole Miss.
The Rebels would force one final turnover with 6.3 seconds remaining. Jaemyn Brakefield stepped to the charity stripe and converted one of two, icing the game for Ole Miss.
Ole Miss returns to action this Saturday against No. 22 Mississippi State (17-7, 5-6 SEC). Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. CT at the SJB Pavilion on ESPN2.

- Malik Dia led Ole Miss with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Dia added three rebounds and one block in 21 minutes of action.
- Four Rebels scored in double-figures: Dia (18), Jaemyn Brakefield (14), Dre Davis (12), and Matthew Murrell (10).
- The Rebels converted their chances at the foul line when they mattered shooting 82.4 percent (14-for-17) at the charity stripe.
