No. 14 Softball Drops Narrow Decision at Kentucky
3/23/2025 | Softball
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 14 Ole Miss softball program dropped the finale of the three-game series at Kentucky, falling 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at John Cropp Stadium.
The Rebels (26-6, 3-3 SEC) built an early lead, but could not hang on, as the Wildcats (21-11, 5-4 SEC) hit a fifth inning home run to go ahead for good.
Aliyah Binford got the offense going in the opening frame, lacing a double to right center field before setting up Persy Llamas. The freshman continued her huge season with an RBI single down the left field line for a 1-0 lead.
The Rebels continued to threaten in the frame, as Lexie Brady doubled and Mackenzie Pickens was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, the Wildcats danced out of further trouble to only trail 1-0.
Miali Guachino took the circle for the Rebels and started well, opening with three strikeouts for the first two innings. From there, her offense got her an additional run of support, as Brady was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. Jaden Pone singled in the next at bat, setting up runners on the corners with two outs. Pone and Brady successfully executed a double steal, with Brady sliding around the tag for a 2-0 lead.
Kentucky would answer in the fourth inning as they built a rally. A sacrifice fly brought home their first run and Guachino nearly got out of the inning after that, but her potential inning ending strikeout got away, allowing the tying run to come home.
The Wildcats were able to jump ahead for good in the fifth inning, as a solo home run by Peyton Plotts gave the hosts a 3-2 advantage.
The Rebels attempted a rally in the sixth inning, as Tate Davis drew a walk but was caught stealing shortly before an Angelina DeLeon hit that could have inched the Rebels closer. The Wildcats then added a fourth run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Needing a response, Lair Beautae started the seventh inning with a single through the right side. Binford was next up and stung yet another ball, but her drive to right center field was caught on the run, which ultimately caught the Rebels on the base paths and became a double play. The Rebels were able to draw back-to-back walks from there, but both Llamas and Brady were stranded on the basepaths to end the game.
Ole Miss returns home to resume SEC play on Saturday, welcoming Missouri to the Ole Miss Softball Stadium for a three-game set. Game one is set for 2 p.m. CT, and will be broadcast via SEC Network Plus.
