Pone Shines, Binford Spins Gem as No. 15 Softball Outlasts No. 6 South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 15 Ole Miss softball program got a clutch, go-ahead RBI single from Jaden Pone to support Aliyah Binford's gem in the circle, as the Rebels downed No. 6 South Carolina, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Beckham Field.
Pone put the Rebels (29-8, 6-5 SEC) ahead for good, delivering the game winning base hit. Binford shined in the circle, going a complete seven innings and striking out four Gamecocks (29-8, 5-6 SEC).
Saturday's game mirrored Friday, as both pitchers got off to terrific starts. Binford faced off against Jori Heard and matched her inning for inning to open the day. Binford bounced back from a bases loaded, no out situation to generate a double play and fly out in the opening inning.
The Rebels pushed for the game's opening run in the second inning, with walks from Lexie Brady and Mackenzie Pickens. Brady would advance to third, but was left stranded.
After another scoreless frame from Binford, she took matters into her own hands, lacing a leadoff double in the top of the fourth inning. While she was ultimately tagged out on a fielder's choice, Persy Llamas moved to second on the play and Lexie Brady drove her home for the game's opening run on an RBI single, making it 1-0.
The Gamecocks tried to answer, tallying a walk and a single in the bottom half of the fourth inning, but Binford would shut the door with an emphatic strikeout to stop the rally.
In the fifth inning, the Rebels nearly added to their lead, as Taylor Malvin and Pone singled with one out. However, a double play would end the scoring opportunity.
The Gamecocks were able to respond in the sixth inning, despite Binford nearly getting out of the jam. The hosts recorded a single and a walk, but got down to their final out after a spectacular diving catch by Pone in left field. A short grounder by Brooke Blankenship was generated, but some indecisiveness on the final out location allowed her to reach and a run to come home, tying the game at 1-1.
However, the Rebels picked up Binford in the top of the seventh inning, as Jamie Mackay singled and Angelina DeLeon drew a hit-by-pitch with one out. A groundout by Malvin moved the runners into scoring position for Pone, who delivered with an RBI single to the Gamecock shortstop to take the lead, 2-1.
Needing just three more outs, Binford walked the first batter, but generated two fly outs. Another walk raised tensions in the stadium, but Binford remained composed, producing a weak groundout to third to end the game and secure her eighth win of the season.
Ole Miss and South Carolina will wrap up their three-game set on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
