Women’s Tennis Falls in Tight Matchup with No. 8 Oklahoma

4/4/2025 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss women's tennis fell short in a close matchup against No. 8 Oklahoma on Friday afternoon, 4-2.

The Rebels (12-10, 4-8 SEC) faced a strong Sooners (15-5, 8-4 SEC) lineup in doubles, with all three courts in a tight race. Alice Soulié and Emily Welker fell short one court two, leaving the pressure for the two remaining.

Down to the wire, both teams kept the score close. Duo Brooklyn Olson and Andrea Nova pushed the Sooners to a 6-6 tie break. Ultimately, ranked Rebels on court one fell short to No. 84 Julia Garcia Ruiz and Alina Shcherbinina 7-5 to give the advantage to Oklahoma.

Singles started strong with two Rebels securing their first sets. Andrea Nova soared through her matchup against Gloriana Nahum. The sophomore put the Rebels on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-4, win.

The Sooners responded with a win on court two. Soulié battled her way in a difficult matchup against No. 51 Emma Staker, but the freshman dropped her court, 7-5, 6-1.

In retaliation, Lucie Petruzelova had something to prove. To keep the match neck and neck, the senior put up the tying point at two, with a win over No. 121 Salakthip Ounmuang, 6-3, 6-1.

Down to the wire, Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher did what she does best and forced a third set through a tie break. Leclercq-Ficher made a strong comeback after a 6-3 first set loss and put up a 7-6 (7-3) victory to elongate the match. The court ultimately went Shcherbinina unfinished at 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 3-3.

After being pushed into a third set, Welker fell short to No. 31 in a nail-biter, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to give Oklahoma the victory.

Up next, the Rebels will host Arkansas for the last home match of the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. This will also serve as the team's Senior Day.
