Former Rebel Gunnar Hoglund Set to Make MLB Debut With Athletics

MIAMI, Fla. – For the second time in less than a week, a former Ole Miss pitcher is set to make their Major League Baseball debut as Gunnar Hoglund has been called up to The Show. Hoglund will get the start for the Athletics Friday night in Miami against the Marlins.
Hoglund becomes the second Rebel to make their MLB debut this season, joining Doug Nikhazy who debuted with the Cleveland Guardians last Saturday. He is the 55th Rebel all-time to reach the big leagues.
Hoglund is the Athletics' 14th ranked prospect and has pitched to the tune of a 2.43 ERA in six starts for the Las Vegas Aviators this year.
Hoglund posted a career record of 10-5 with an ERA of 3.68 and 186 strikeouts during his time as a Rebel. He made just one appearance out of the bullpen as a freshman, working primarily as a starter during his career.
In 2021, Hoglund made 11 starts with 96 strikeouts and a 2.87 ERA before losing the rest of the season to a torn UCL. This came on the heels of a 2020 campaign that began with a 3-0 record and a 1.16 ERA before being cut short by COVID-19.
Hoglund was drafted in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He was acquired by the Athletics in March of 2022 in the trade that sent Matt Chapman to Toronto.
