Michael La Sasso Earns Sponsor Exemption for 2025 Rocket Classic

5/22/2025 | Men's Golf

DETROIT – The Rocket Classic announced today that Ole Miss golfer Michael La Sasso has received a sponsor exemption to compete in its 2025 tournament, scheduled for June 25–29 at Detroit Golf Club. It will be La Sasso's PGA TOUR debut after receiving a surprise invitation from tournament representatives.

The Raleigh native has been nothing short of special in his junior season, guiding the Rebels to their first No. 1 ranking in program history. He leads the team with a 69.51 scoring average and has 23 rounds under-par on the year.

The First Team All-SEC selection has tallied the second most rounds in the 60s in a single season in program history at 18.

La Sasso broke through for his first collegiate win back in the fall at the Hamptons Intercollegiate. He posted (201, -15) winning the tournament by 11 strokes.

He notched his second victory of the season in the team's regular season finale at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. Alongside his teammate Tom Fischer, La Sasso carded (203, -13) which tied the individual low-54 in tournament history.

La Sasso has helped Ole Miss to three wins this season, marking the most victories since 2016-17. The Rebels have finished inside the top two eight times with La Sasso placing inside the top five in four of those events. He is currently ranked the No. 4 NCAA Division I individual golfer and sits 11th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

He was also selected to represent Team USA in the 2025 Arnold Palmer Cup, marking the second straight year he will compete for the United States.

At the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, La Sasso helped Ole Miss secure their 13th NCAA Championship appearance (six individual, seven team) in program history. The No. 3 Rebels finished in second place with the runner-up finish marking the best in an NCAA Regional in program history.

La Sasso posted a final round six-under 66 to finish tied for second. His runner-up finish is the second-best placement in an NCAA Regional by an Ole Miss Rebel.

The Rocket Classic made history in 2019 as the first PGA TOUR event ever held in the city of Detroit and has continued to make a positive and lasting impact on the city and its residents through its multi-year "Changing the Course" campaign, established in 2020 to end the digital divide in Detroit and ensure digital accessibility for all city residents.

The Rocket Classic was the most awarded event during the 2018-19 PGA TOUR season, being recognized for "Best Special Event" (then known as the AREA 313 Celebrity Challenge) and "Best Tournament Sales" as well as being honored with the first "Fair Way Award" for its diversity and inclusion initiatives. The Fair Way Award was bestowed upon the Rocket Classic again in 2023 and 2024, and in 2024 the tournament also received the Best Volunteer Program award. Ole Miss continues to prep for the NCAA Championship May 23-28, at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa, in Carlsbad, California. The Championship will feature 30 teams and six individuals from non-qualifying teams.
