Volleyball Drops Narrow Decision at No. 22 Georgia Tech

8/30/2025 | Volleyball

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Ole Miss volleyball program fought through adversity and pushed No. 22 Georgia Tech to the limit, but fell, 3-1, on Saturday evening at the O'Keefe Gymnasium.

Gabi Placide paced the Rebels (1-1, 0-0 SEC) with 22 kills, five digs and three service aces, while Mokihana Tufono added 45 assists and five digs. Noemi Despaigne led the Yellow Jackets (2-0, 0-0 ACC) with 20 kills.

While Shayla Meyer got off to a strong start with a quick pair of kills, the Rebels fell into an early 9-4 hole at the first timeout. While the lead ultimately grew to 14-6, the Rebels would not quit.

A 3-0 run on the serve of Cameron Bradley, followed by another 4-0 run on Meyer's serve helped the Rebels cut the lead to 16-13. Two kills and a block by Tessa Jones helped the Rebels inch closer but Keirstyn Carlton's first collegiate kill and a service ace by Cammy Niesen finally tied the match at 23-23. The two sides exchanged points, before a Rebel block and a service ace by Placide sealed a 27-25 first set win.

The hosts began to mount a response, but a well-rounded Rebel attack kept it close at a 9-8 deficit. However, the Yellow Jackets managed a critical 4-0 run and were able to hold the Rebels at arm's length, despite a 4-1 run that cut the Yellow Jackets lead to just two. Ultimately, the hosts took the set 25-19.

The Rebels jumped out to an early advantage in the third set, as Placide notched three kills to put Ole Miss ahead 7-5. However, the Yellow Jackets found their stride, going on a 5-1 initial run in what became a 12-5 stretch to take a 17-12 lead. Placide tried to keep it close, but the Yellow Jackets did enough to secure a 25-17 third set win.

With momentum on their side, the hosts took an early 6-2 lead. However, the Rebels would not go quietly. Melia Johnson started to heat up, with three of her 10 kills early in the fourth set to 13-13. Georgia Tech answered back and took a 23-17 advantage to put the pressure on the Rebels. Tessa Jones delivered a kill, before back-to-back service aces by Meyer and another kill by Placide to cut the lead to 23-21. The Yellow Jackets earned three match points, but Placide would not be denied, with two kills and a block to save all three match points and tie it at 24-24. Placide and Carlton earned a block to save a fourth match point and kill by Johnson saved a fifth. However, the Yellow Jackets were able to outlast the Rebels, taking the fourth set, 28-26.

The Rebels will wrap up the Georgia Tech Classic on Sunday morning, as the Rebels face off against Wofford at 10 a.m. CT.
