Placide Sets Career-High as Volleyball Earn Gritty Victory over UAlbany

LUBBOCK, Texas – Behind another career-day from Gabi Placide, the Ole Miss volleyball program earned a gritty, 3-1 victory over UAlbany to complete a perfect weekend at the Red Raider Classic.
Placide continued her enormous week for the Rebels (8-3, 0-0 SEC), tallying a new career-high 27 kills along with eight digs and four blocks on .246 hitting. Tessa Jones and Keirstyn Carlton both shined on the block, with Jones registering a season-high 10 kills and three blocks on .529 hitting and Carlton tallying eight kills and a career-high seven blocks on .500 hitting. Shynelle Woroniuk tallied 22 kills to lead the Great Danes (5-7, 0-0 America East).
The day began with a somewhat sluggish start, as the Rebels trailed early 9-6. Placide and setter Mokihana Tufono found their rhythm, connecting for a pair of kills, but the Great Danes showed fight and built a 20-14 advantage. The Rebels quickly regrouped and mounted a rally, recording a 6-1 run to cut the UAlbany lead to just one. A timely ace by Cammy Niesen helped complete the comeback, before Carlton took over, tallying a kill and two blocks to secure the final three points and take the set 25-23.
The Rebels appeared to be pulling away with the match, as the kills kept pouring in from Placide and Carlton. Ole Miss built a 20-15 lead, but the pesky Great Danes did not budge. UAlbany responded with a 9-3 run, earning a set point at 24-23. Placide saved it with a kill and Jones added another to give Ole Miss a set point. However, UAlbany saved set point and rallied to take three straight points and the set 27-25.
Momentum had suddenly found its way over the Great Danes side, as they built a 9-7 edge. The Rebels struggled to get momentum beyond Placide and UAlbany's lead rose further to 14-10. However, a key block from Jones and Carly Paugh sparked some life and the Rebels started to claw back. Placide crossed 20 kills for the match in the third set alone and Shayla Meyer started to get hot as the Rebels rallied to retake the lead. Three consecutive blocks put the Rebels in front 20-19. UAlbany worked the score back to 23-23, but a timely service error and a Jones kill allowed the Rebels to come out ahead 25-23.
The Rebels began to hit their stride in the fourth set, building an early 6-3 advantage that featured two early Cameron Bradley aces. Placide continued to make athletic plays, while Tufono jumped into the offense as the Rebels hit .312 in the set and pulled in front. UAlbany rallied again, coming all the way back to take a 16-15 lead, but the Rebels locked in with two kills apiece from Tufono and Jones. Tufono would finish with five kills, 50 assists and six digs as the Rebels pulled away to take the set 25-19.
The Rebels are back in action to open SEC play next weekend, beginning with a trip to Arkansas on Friday at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be televised on SEC Network Plus.
