Cross Country Scores Pair of Ranked Wins at Gans Creek Classic
9/26/2025 | Cross Country
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country each nabbed a ranked win amid a powerful field of teams at the 2025 Gans Creek Classic, hosted by Missouri on Friday morning.
Both Rebel squads finished 20th in their respective races, with the Ole Miss women opening the morning in 20th place in the Gold Invitational 6K at 510 points (ahead of No. 24 Lipscomb in 22nd place at 530 and behind No. 6 Alabama in 19th place at 479), while the 25th-ranked Rebel men were 20th in the Gold Invitational 8K at 526 points (ahead of No. 28 Furman in 21st place at 561).
Leading the way for the Ole Miss women were seniors Beth Arentz and Sophie Baumann in their season debuts. Arentz clocked a career-best 6K time of 20:03.0 to finish 30th overall, while Baumann was 64th at 20:28.1 in her opener.
Most of the remainder of the Rebel women's squad made their 6K career debuts today. Rounding out the competition for Ole Miss in the invitational 6K on Friday were: freshman Leah Penick (109th, 20:56.5), redshirt sophomore Ella Johnson (141st, 21:14.0), junior Adie Luna (179th, 21:37.5), redshirt sophomore Hannah Doyle (185th, 21:40.4), freshman Addy Mitchell (186th, 21:40.8) and freshman Natalie Duggan (198th, 21:51.0).
In the non-invitational 6K race, junior Brooke Preputnick finished 102nd at 22:17.8 in her first career 6K.
On the men's side, 19 of the 30 nationally ranked squads were in attendance in what turned out to be a difficult competition all around. No. 1 Iowa State ran away with the team title by a 60-point margin, while the Rebel men were able to hang tough and notch a ranked win despite being without its top runner, All-SEC senior Toby Gillen.
Redshirt junior Kidus Misgina, though, excelled in his Ole Miss cross country debut. Misgina – the 10K school record holder on the track outdoors – took 11th place overall at a 39-second 8K career-best of 22:51.8. Each of the top 31 finishers today broke the previous course record at Missouri, a 23:07.6 set by Kentucky's Edward Bird at this meet a year ago.
All-SEC senior Evan Thornton-Sherman opened his final campaign with a top-50 finish of his own, taking 49th place at 23:22.7. Other Rebel men running Friday included redshirt sophomore Lukas Ehrle in his debut (141st, 24:07.0), senior Gabe Scales (172nd, 24:19.8), redshirt freshman Ky Hehir (183rd, 24:24.4) and redshirt sophomore Zack Gilbertson (189th, 24:33.6).
In the non-invitational 8K, redshirt sophomore Aidan Hodge ran a career-best 24:34.7 in 68th place, while redshirt sophomore Stone Smith made his 8K debut in 214th place at 26:07.2.
