Volleyball Rallies for Thrilling Victory at Oklahoma

9/28/2025 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla. – The Ole Miss volleyball program mounted a gritty rally, recovering to take down Oklahoma, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at McCasland Field House.

Gabi Placide led the Rebels (9-4, 1-1 SEC) with 21 kills, while Shayla Meyer added 17 kills on .265 hitting. Mokihana Tufono also shined, tallying 46 assists, a career-high six blocks and three kills. Alexis Shelton led the way for the Sooners (9-3, 1-1 SEC) with 17 kills.

The Rebel defense held the Sooners to a .146 hitting percentage, good for its lowest of the season and the program's lowest since Nov. 10, 2023 against Houston. Additionally, it marked the Rebels first-ever victory over Oklahoma.

Both sides struggled to gain momentum to open the match, as each respective block shined. The majority of the Rebel offense ran through Placide, as she tallied four kills and two service aces to put Ole Miss ahead 15-13. Errors would pile up for both sides, but the match remained level at 23-23. A kill by Tufono gave the Rebels set point in the first, but the Sooners rallied to save it and take the set, 26-24.

Oklahoma looked to be in control early in the second set, building a 9-6 lead. However, an early timeout helped the Rebels regroup and they promptly went on a 6-1 run to take a 12-10 advantage. The Rebels continued to get timely points, as Tufono and Keirstyn Carlton combined on a key block and Tufono added a service ace to expand the lead to 17-12. A free ball kill by Cammy Niesen gave the Rebels all they needed, as they kept the hosts at arm's length and comfortably took the second set, 25-17.

Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead once again, building a 7-4 advantage. That would start a series of runs between each team, beginning with a 5-0 run on Cameron Bradley's serve, before a 7-1 run by the Sooners to give them a 15-11 lead. Ole Miss punched back with a 5-1 run that featured kills from Carlton and Meyer and took a lead into the dying embers of the set. Oklahoma used a pair of Ole Miss errors to take a 23-20 advantage, but the Rebels quickly erased it with a kill from Placide and another Bradley ace to tie the match at 23-23. After trading points, Oklahoma was able to emerge with a 27-25 win.

Meyer began to heat up in the fourth set with three early kills to build a slim 5-4 advantage. After a series of runs throughout the third set, the fourth remained more consistent, with each side juggling emphatic kills with errors. A kill by Tufono helped the Rebels gain a little breathing room, taking a 14-11 lead. However, the Sooners began to push back and ultimately put the Rebels on the brink, up 22-20. The Rebels did not quit, immediately answering with two Meyer kills and two more Oklahoma errors to take a 24-22 lead. While Oklahoma saved the first set point, Meyer delivered yet another big swing to force a fifth set, 25-23.

With palpable tension in the building, the Rebels and Sooners combined to commit four service errors and an attacking error in the first five points. However, it would be the Rebels to lock in first, as Placide tallied a kill and a block in quick succession to help take a 6-2 lead. The Rebels leaned heavily on Placide and Meyer in the fifth set, with Placide's start and a critical 4-0 run producing a 12-5 advantage. The Rebels ultimately did enough to secure the match, as Meyer added two more kills and Placide finished off the win with a well-placed swing, to take the fifth set 15-9.

The Rebels return home for the SEC home opener against No. 3 Kentucky. The match is set for Friday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. CT and will be televised on the SEC Network.
