Volleyball Falls to South Dakota State in SDSU Invitational Opener
9/5/2025 | Volleyball
BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Ole Miss volleyball program dropped a 3-0 decision to South Dakota State to begin the South Dakota State Invitational on Friday night at First Bank & Trust Arena.
Gabi Placide led the Rebels (2-2, 0-0 SEC) for the fourth-straight match with 12 kills and three blocks. Sylvie Zgonc paced the Jackrabbits (2-1, 0-0 Summit) with 14 kills.
The first set opened with promise, as kills by Placide and Tessa Jones opened with a 5-4 advantage. However, the hosts delivered a 5-0 run to take command. The Rebels were able to get some momentum back and capitalized on errors by the Jackrabbits, before a block by Placide and Jones cut the SDSU lead to 17-16. Ultimately, the Jackrabbits earned a critical 3-0 run that helped create some distance that they would maintain, taking the first set 25-20.
With momentum on their side, the Jackrabbits surged to begin the second set, building a 16-6 lead. The lead hovered around 10 for South Dakota State, until the Rebels found some late momentum. Freshman Carly Paugh delivered some energy to spark the run back in the set, tallying a block and a kill to cut it to a six-point deficit, but the Jackrabbits took the set 25-18.
With their backs against the wall, the Rebels jumped out to a 5-2 advantage, behind a kill and an ace by Placide. Nevertheless, the Jackrabbits punched back with a 7-1 run to take a 9-6 advantage. The Rebels kept fighting with two more kills from Placide and one from Shayla Meyer, but the Jackrabbits extended the advantage to 19-13. Ultimately, a pair of late kills from Jones were not enough, as the Jackrabbits secured the final set 25-20.
The Rebels return to action on Saturday in day two of the South Dakota State Invitational, facing Wyoming at 1 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on the Summit League Network.
