OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss volleyball program made a late push, but were unable to recover in time, falling 3-0 to LSU on Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
Despite .269 hitting, seven kills, four blocks and no errors from Shayla Meyer, the Rebels (8-14, 2-9 SEC) could not complete a late comeback against the Tigers (10-10, 5-6 SEC). Freshman Coco Natarajan stepped in to record a career-high 12 assists, while Bella Bonanno added 11 digs.
Jorda Crook delivered a quick pair of kills, but the Rebels found themselves in an early hole in the opening set. The Tigers jumped out to a 9-3 advantage, forcing the Rebels to regroup. The Rebels kept the score line in check thanks to some LSU service errors and kills from Melia Johnson. Ole Miss tallied a 5-1 run to get back in the set, down 21-18, but the Tigers managed to pull away, winning 25-20.
Much like the first set, the Rebels found themselves in an early hole. Jaidyn Hartsfield helped get some momentum back with a kill and an ace, but the Rebels were down 15-9 at the technical timeout. The Rebels slowly tried to chip away, getting a kill and block from Meyer and cutting the lead to 20-16. However, the Tigers pulled away to take the set, 25-19.
The Rebels came out of the gates flying in the third set, trying to mount a rally. Behind two kills and a block from Crook, the Rebels surged to a 7-2 advantage. However, the Tigers chipped away, retaking an advantage of 12-11. The Rebels did not quit though, as kills from Nina Moorer, Meyer and a Bonanno ace got the hosts back in front. While LSU was able to retake the lead, the Rebels made one last push, rallying from a 23-19 deficit with a 3-0 run. A late LSU error saved one set point, but the Tigers managed to hold on to win 25-23.
The Rebels return to action on Friday, hosting Oklahoma at 3 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
