Pickens Hits Home Run as Softball Falls at No. 2 Texas
3/13/2026 | Softball
AUSTIN, Texas – Despite a home run from Mackenzie Pickens, the Ole Miss softball program dropped a narrow, 3-1 decision at No. 2 Texas on Friday evening at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
The Rebels (19-9, 0-4 SEC) brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth inning, but were unable to overcome the No. 2 Longhorns (24-1, 4-0 SEC), who built an early lead and held on for the remaining five innings.
The Longhorns were the first team to strike, scoring in the opening inning thanks to some timely base running and a pair of singles. That lead increased further in the second inning, as Texas emerged with a 3-0 lead.
The Rebels got a rally going in the third inning, as Grace Thompson drew a hit-by-pitch and Tenly Grisham walked. However, a well struck ball up the middle by Taylor Malvin was snared by Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan, who doubled off Grisham at first and helped the hosts get out of a jam.
Pitcher Kyra Aycock showed great composure to keep the Rebels in the game, securing four consecutive scoreless frames. The Rebel defense helped generate a key putout at home that turned into a rundown, double play in the fourth inning and kept the Longhorns from scoring.
The Rebels finally broke through in the sixth inning, as Pickens attacked the second pitch she saw with a booming solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 3-1. A Persy Llamas single provided even more life, but the Longhorns stifled the rally with a pair of ground ball outs.
Aycock would polish off a strong outing in the circle with a one-two-three frame in the sixth inning to give Ole Miss life entering the seventh. Aycock finished the day allowing just one hit over the last four frames.
While a potential floater from Kennedy Bunker nearly fell in for a hit, the Rebels were unable to get a runner on the base paths as the Longhorns closed out the victory in the seventh inning.
The Rebels are back in action on Saturday, competing in game two against the Longhorns. The game is set to start at 12 p.m. CT and will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
