Women’s Tennis Defeated by No. 7 Texas

OXFORD, Miss. – Despite taking the doubles point early, No. 41 Ole Miss women's tennis ultimately succumbed to No. 7 Texas, 4-1, at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center on Sunday.
Ole Miss (9-9, 3-8 SEC) set the tone early in doubles play as the No. 23 pairing of Andrea Nova and Emily Welker earned a victory against No. 53 Anastasia Abbagnato and Salma Drugdova, 6-2.
Texas (14-4, 9-2 SEC) would respond, with Carmen Herea and Mathilde Ngijol-Carré defeating Ichino Horikawa and Beatrice Stagno, 6-3.
The deciding match for the doubles point came down to Alice Soulié and Riley Crowder, who were up against No. 71 Elizabeth Ionescu and Christasha McNeil. The Longhorns would play to the brink of closing out doubles play as Ionescu and McNeil got out to a 5-3 advantage, but Soulié and Crowder, the Rebels, came back to knot the match 6-6, forcing a tiebreaker. Soulié and Crowder went on to clinch the doubles point as they won the tiebreaker, 7-2.
In singles play, Texas would round off four straight courts to clinch the match. Before the match was clinched, Stagno was out in front in her matchup against Ngijol-Carre, 6-3, 5-3. Additionally, No. 15 Welker was headed into a third set with No. 1 Herea before the match went unfinished, 6-3, 3-6.
The Rebels will be back in action at the Palmer/Salloum Outdoor Tennis Center on Thursday, April 2, at 4 p.m. CT against No. 49 Mississippi State.
