Football Practice Report: Defense Builds Toward Season Opener

8/18/2026 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss football team has entered the third week of fall camp, continuing to build toward the 2026 season opener against Louisville. With the season getting closer, the Rebels are using each practice to sharpen their execution and continue developing on both sides of the ball.

The Rebels are coming off their first scrimmage of fall camp as preparations continue for the 2026 season. With Ole Miss ranked No. 9 in the AP Poll, expectations remain high as the Rebels continue to evaluate their roster and build toward the season opener. Defensive coordinator Bryan Brown met with the media Tuesday to discuss the progress of his unit, including the first scrimmage, the development of the pass rush and the identity he wants the defense to establish.

First Scrimmage
Saturday's first scrimmage gave the defense an opportunity to evaluate players in a game-like environment and see how they handled the different challenges that come with playing inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

"We was able to see the guys that we really needed to see that haven't really been in an environment, you know, in the stadium."

Brown said the scrimmage was especially valuable for evaluating communication and playmaking without coaches on the field directing players.

"We was able to see what we need to see — who can communicate without coaches on the field, who can play and make plays out on the field."

Pass Rush
With the Rebels replacing some pass-rushing production from the offseason, Brown said the responsibility will be shared across the defensive front rather than relying on one player to carry the load.

"I think just from up front, I think we're doing it as a group."

Brown pointed to Suntarine Perkins, Kam Franklin, Blake Purchase and Jonathan Maldonado as players who have stepped up during camp and contributed to the pass rush.

"All of those guys have done a really good job of stepping up, right, and doing a really good job from a pass rush standpoint."

Keaton Thomas
Brown has been impressed with the early impact of linebacker Keaton Thomas, highlighting his preparation, competitiveness and desire to establish himself with the Rebels.

"He's hungry. He's really, really hungry to prove that he belongs in this league."

Thomas has also shown his willingness to put in extra work, with Brown noting his consistent presence in the film room and his ability to communicate and make plays on the field.

"He's doing a heck of a job of communicating, flying around, making plays and doing his job."

Defensive Identity
As fall camp continues, Brown said the Rebels are working to establish a defensive identity centered around physicality, speed and smart play.

"The number one thing we want to be physical. We want to be a really, really physical defense."

The Rebels also want to limit explosive plays while keeping the defense disciplined and playing fast throughout the season.

"We want to play fast, and we want to make sure we limit explosive plays and play really smart."
