OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss men's golf team travels to Tampa, Fla., Monday and Tuesday for the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament, which is co- hosted by the University of Florida and Central Florida, will be held at the Old Memorial Golf Course, a par 72, 7,236-yard course.
The Rebels will be part of an excellent field that includes Alabama, No. 20 Auburn, Central Florida, College of Charleston, No. 11 Florida, Florida State, Georgia State, Kentucky, Maryland, No. 19 North Florida, No. 18 Oklahoma, South Alabama, South Florida and Tennessee.
Ole Miss took both titles in the inaugural Gary Koch/Cleveland Intercollegiate a year ago in Orlando. The Rebels' 279-283-287--849 was their lowest tournament total since 1985. Haymes Snedeker captured the individual crown with a 67-68-68--203, tying the lowest three- round score in school history. The team title was one of two on the year for the Rebels, who also took championship honors at the Alabama Spring Invitational last March.
If Ole Miss is to defend its crown this year, Troy Muller will need to continue his hot play. The junior from Braithwaite, La., posted his second career top five finish at the Tennessee Tournament of Champions on Oct. 11 and 12. Muller was in a first-place tie after day one and finished fifth with a score of 69-70-73--212. Muller placed 12th at last year's Gary Koch Intercollegiate.
Also expected to compete in Tampa is Chris Malloy, Jon Bartlett and Phil Caravia. Malloy, a senior from Duluth, Ga., earned his second career top 20 finish in the Rebels' season-opening tournament, ranking 15th at the Colorado State Intercollegiate on Sept. 27 and 28. Bartlett and Caravia will be looking to repeat their performances from the 1998 Gary Koch. Bartlett, a senior from Ocala, Fla., and Caravia, a junior from Belleville, Ill., placed 13th and 23rd, respectively, in last year's tournament.
