Rebels Shutout By South Carolina On the Road

COLUMBIA, S.C. - In the first of a two-game Southeastern Conference road trip, the Ole Miss Lady Rebel volleyball team lost to South Carolina, ranked second in the SEC, 3-0 Friday night.

With two service aces in the match, senior setter Lisa Frannino moved ahead of Julia Sitarz to rank fourth in the Lady Rebel career book. With 11 aces already this season, she now boasts 122 for her career and is just four shy of Chris Houck, who played for Ole Miss from 1984-87 and ranks third with 126 aces.

The Lady Rebels (8-8, 0-4 SEC) continues to look for its first conference victory of the season, while the Gamecocks (10-6, 4-1 SEC) bounced back from their first conference loss last weekend to Arkansas to pick up their eighth consecutive victory over Ole Miss.

South Carolina jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one and surrendered the lead only once in the match. Ole Miss never held the lead in the 15-7 loss in game one or the 15-6 loss in game two. The Lady Rebels did take a brief 8-7 lead in game three before South Carolina went on a five point run to take the 11-8 advantage. Ole Miss returned the five point run to knot the game at 11. South Carolina then closed out the match 15-11.

Freshman Sarah Lansden continued her outstanding conference play against the Gamecocks. With a .400 attacking percentage and a block assist, Lansden currently leads the team in total blocks and ranks second in attacking percentage in conference play.

Senior team captain Lauren Dorcheus remained the Lady Rebels most consistent player, leading the team with a .302 hitting percentage. She added seven kills to just three errors on 14 attempts against the Gamecocks along with eight digs.

Sophomore Jaime Burns led the team with 11 kills and nine digs. Breaking the 200 kill mark for the season, she ranks sixth in the conference in kills per game, with a 3.82 average.

Ole Miss now travels to Athens, Ga. to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Georgia on Sunday at 1:00 CDT. This is the oldest current rivalry for the Lady Rebels, dating back to their second ever intercollegiate match back in 1976. Sunday's match-up will mark the 32nd meeting with the Lady Bulldogs, with Georgia holding the series advantage 27-4. Ole Miss looking for their first win over Georgia since 1983.
