BOZEMAN, Mt. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team shot 41.5 percent from behind the arc with a school record 17 three-pointers, on their way to downing Bowling Green 80-73 in the first round of the Montana State Gran Tree Inn Classic, Friday at Worthington Arena.
The two teams combined for an NCAA record 31 three-pointers in a game. The previous high was 26 in a game between Oklahoma and Iowa State on Jan. 7, 1996. The Lady Rebels were one three-pointer away from the NCAA record by one team in a game, which is 18.
Ole Miss will meet the winner of the Montana State/Morehead State game at 8:30 p.m., mst, Saturday, for the championship.
Five players scored in double-figures led by junior guard Becky Myatt who tallied 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds. She also had only one turnover. Junior Stephanie Murphy added 14 points, while sophomore Takela Corbitt and junior Heather Bantz chipped in 12 points apiece.
"Bowling Green has a fine team," head coach Ron Aldy said. "They run a very disciplined offense and are very solid for their size. This was a good test for us and something we needed. I thought we played much better in the second half. Becky had a solid game and Takela stepped it up tonight."
Both teams were lighting it up in the first half, finishing with 21 threes combined. The Lady Rebels had 11 on their way to a six point (48-42) halftime lead.
Ole Miss shut the door in a hurry, going on a 24-6 run to open the second half as they led 72-48 with 9:47 left in the game. They never looked back.
The Lady Rebels outrebounded Bowling Green 53-31. Freshman Shayla Day led Ole Miss on the boards with seven rebounds, while Murphy grabbed six along with Myatt. Ole Miss had 21 assists and only 11 turnovers.
