OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams return to action at the Alabama Relays Thursday through Sunday. The meet, which will be hosted by the University of Alabama, will be Ole Miss' third competition of the outdoor season, and head coach Joe Walker hopes that his squads will show improvement this weekend.
"We had a decent showing, as a team, at the SEC Quad Meet at LSU last Sunday," said Walker. "It was good to see several of our athletes, who struggled during the indoor season, have solid performances for us at LSU. I hope that we will continue to improve as the season progresses and peak for the SEC Championships in mid-May."
The Alabama Relays kick off on Thursday and Friday with the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon competitions. Lady Rebel sophomore Brandy Barnett will participate in the heptathlon. On Friday, the men's and women's 10,000 meters will be run, with Rebel senior Calvin Thigpen to compete in the men's race. The men's hammer throw will also be held on Friday, and junior John Frierson will represent Ole Miss in that event.
At last Sunday's SEC Quad Meet in New Orleans, sophomore Teneeshia Jones paced the Lady Rebel effort with three top-five finishes. The Shannon, Miss., native won the 100 meters with a school-record time of 11.57, shattering the previous record of 11.88 set by Kim Ingram in 1992. Jones also placed second in the 200 meters in a time of 23.94, and was fifth in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 14.21. Her time of 23.94 in the 200 meters is tied for third best in Lady Rebel history.
The Lady Rebels also posted three other first-place finishes at the SEC Quad Meet, with Brandy Mack winning the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:00.71) and Brandy Barnett winning the high jump (5-7).
On the men's side, senior Alonzo Banks and sophomore Chad Dixon led the Rebels. Banks, who won the 1996 SEC title in the 400 meters, placed first in the event with a time of 46.46, while Dixon also recorded a first-place finish, taking top honors in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:35.92. Sophomores Willie Moore and Larry Henderson also had solid performances for the Rebels at the SEC Quad Meet, as both recorded two top-five finishes. Moore was second in the 100 meters (10.60) and fourth in the 200 meters (21.56), while Henderson finished second in the 800 meters (1:54.13) and fifth in the 1500 meters (3:57.52).
