OXFORD, Miss. - University of Mississippi head baseball coach Pat Harrison announced his final signees of the early fall signing period Tuesday, inking right-handed pitcher Brett Young of Westminster, Calif., infielder Chad Sterbens of Tustin, Calif., and catcher Charlie Waite of Costa Mesa, Calif, to national letters of intent.

The Rebels signed a total of seven players during the early signing period, including four from the state of California. Ole Miss announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Casey Fuller of Sacramento City College last Thursday.

"All three are very talented and should play important roles in our program," Harrison said. "Young has been selected as one of the top pitchers in California. Sterbens is a great defensive player who can also run, and Waite was an all-state catcher last spring."

Both Young and Sterbens are high school teammates at Calvary Chapel High School.

Young, 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, went 8-2 on the mound as a junior last spring, posting a 0.95 ERA and striking out 79 in 59 innings of work. He was selected for the 1998 Area Code Games, and was rated a three- star player by Baseball America magazine and as one of the top pitchers in California by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Sterbens, 5-foot-11, 170 pounds, plays both shortstop and second base. During his junior campaign last spring, Sterbens posted a .440 batting average with 30 RBI and was a perfect 42-of-42 in stolen bases. He was also rated as one of the top high school players in the nation by Baseball America.

Waite, 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, hit .363 with five home runs and 24 RBI last spring as a junior for Newport Harbor High School. Waite earned both all-league and All-CIF honors.

Ole Miss is coming off a 30-23 season in which they finished ranked No. 29 in the final NCAA RPI rankings. The Rebels are scheduled to return six position starters this spring, including senior second baseman Brad Henderson, a second-team All-SEC selection in 1998.
