OXFORD, Miss. - Robert Shelton's fifth-inning sacrifice fly to score Chad Mead broke a 2-2 tie as Ole Miss would score five runs in the inning en route to a 6-4 win over visiting Southeast Missouri State, Tuesday night at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The win moved the Rebels back to the .500-mark on the season at 4-4. The Indians dropped to 1-3 on the year.
Junior right-hander Dan McShea (1-0) fanned a career-high seven while picking up his first win of the season. McShea worked five innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks.
Sophomore right-hander Justin Huisman notched his second save of the year by recording the final two outs of the ninth inning.
Daniel Rodriguez suffered the loss for SE Missouri State, allowing five earned runs on five hits and one walk in 3 2/3 innings.
"I was real happy with the way we played tonight," said third-year head coach Pat Harrison. "We got behind early but we did a good job of keeping our focus."
The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Jeremy Johnson led the game off with a single and Steve Lowe followed with a double to score Johnson. Lowe then later scored on a wild pitch.
Junior Michael Rosamond and senior Chad Mead combined to record four of Ole Miss' seven hits as the Rebels were out-hit by the Indians 12-7. Rosamond went 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI, and Mead was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Mead also extended his hitting to a career-best eight games.
The two teams will wrap-up their two-game series tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. Ole Miss is scheduled to start Mead on the mound. Mead is 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA after taking a no decision in his first start of the year last Tuesday against Austin Peay.
