BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Ole Miss sophomore right-hander Jeff McAvoy was named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his shutout performance against LSU this past Saturday.
McAvoy allowed just six hits and two walks, and didn't allow a Tiger baserunner to advance past second during the Rebels' 9-0 win. Saturday's shut out marked the first time LSU had been shut out in 157 games dating back to 1996. He also fanned seven, one shy of his season-high of eight against Memphis back on Feb. 28.
McAvoy, who transferred to Ole Miss from Western Carolina prior to this season, finished the season 5-5 with a 6.72 ERA and recorded 69 strikeouts in 85 2/3 innings.
The Rebels finished the year by taking two-of-three from then No. 2-LSU this past weekend to finish 30-23 overall and 13-15 in the SEC. It was Ole Miss' first winning season since 1995 and the Rebels' most conference wins since that 1995 season.
